At work Company provides communication and electronic
security solutions.
Home and family Chesapeake; my recently supersized
family consists of my husband Gino Maluto and our six children.
Career progression Originally I was hired to develop
the Security Division. Initially I was the sole estimator, project
manager and technician. Once established, I became actively involved
in the Communications Division and in managing all aspects of company
operations. In 2002, I took the opportunity to become the majority
stockholder and president. By 2008, I had positioned the company
and myself to take full ownership.
Proudest business achievement Taking full ownership
of the company in 2008 and celebrating 15 great years in 2010.
Biggest success factor Thanks to a tough but loving
father and a son with cerebral palsy, I don't easily accept being
told "no." I've learned to find ways to make things happen
by thinking outside the box and not allowing obstacles to alter
my course.
Volunteer and community activities Special Olympics,
Virginia Peninsula foodbank, Salvation Army, ARC of Virginia, Phoebus
High School football team, Locks of Love, Cerebral Palsy 5K, various
cancer treatment donations, Helping Hands, Red Cross, Habitat for
Humanity.
Balancing time I have a great support team. Professionally
and personally I am surrounded by people who work toward the same
goals. Without their support, there would never be enough time.
Biggest obstacles Prior to my becoming president
and majority stockholder, three men had been operating the company.
It was difficult earning respect and recognition in our industry.
Many associates would bypass me and go directly to another stockholder.
I remained driven and refused to allow that to affect my direction
for the company. It was by staying focused, allowing my work ethic
to speak for me, creating new and stronger relationships in the
construction and professional industries, that I was able to move
the company forward.
Professional goal in the next five years To remain
focused on my vision for the company by continuing to strengthen
our core services, such as security, fiber optics and IP services.
Additionally, I hope to see my vision for an assisted living community
for intellectually disabled individuals well on its way to fruition.
Advice for women in the workforce Go for it! Not
everyone is going to believe in you or your vision. Believe in yourself,
stay focused and show them you mean business. And always remember
to pay it forward.
Downtime Downtime? Is there really such a thing?
Running around with the kids to baseball, gymnastics, Special Olympics,
working in our yard, reading and mindless comedies.
What gets under your skin? Incompetence and lack
of integrity.
